What is STYX?
STYX is a 3D runner game made in only 6 weeks by Monkey Moves, 13 students at The Game Assembly in Malmö. It was our first ever game project at the school and was developed in the Unity engine. Our reference for it was the indie game Race The Sun.
What I did
I implemented all the player movement, all the camera handling, power-ups, and the collision logic for frontal-collision death and the side-collision bounce. I also did some work on the main menu and since I had previous Unity experience I provided a lot of technical support and setup for the rest of the group.
Reflection
As this was our first project I learned a whole lot including Agile methodology, working in a team and delivering features.
Things did go wrong in this project however, I worked iteratively by first implementing MVP placeholder movement but its metrics didn’t quite match the reference game well enough, meaning our Level Designers designed the levels for the wrong player metrics. After iterating on the movement I was able to get it closer to the reference game and work a lot nicer but by that point it was too late and the new movement had to be tuned to be more similar to the old MVP one since Level Design didn’t have time to re-design their levels for the correct metrics. Lesson learned however!
